Unilateral paralysis of the diaphragm during pregnancy : case report and literature review

Abstract

|
Paralysis of one hemidiaphragm, called eventration of the diaphragm, is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidently and often does not additional diagnostic workup, therefore, this condition remains undiagnosed and little is known about its treatment. But in the setting of pregnancy, it may require early surgical correction with cesarean section. We report the case of a patient in her 3rd trimester of pregnancy, not known to have paralysis of the diaphragm, who presented to the hospital with a vaginal discharge and with a chest radiograph showing left diaphragmatic eventration incidently, for which she underwent thoracotomy and urgent cesarean section.
